.0 PREMISES. The original Deskbound Complex was a studio in name only: one desk, with a computer on it. No further equipment was held, and none was missed. From this surface came the tracks, the ideas, and a working policy that remains in force today. Great records do not require racks of gear or corporate gloss. They require heart, a bit of nerve, and a flat surface to put your laptop on.
.1 FIRST APPEARANCE IN THE RECORD. The name is no retrofit: the sleeve of The MFA’s 2004 single ‘The Difference It Makes’ credits “remix and additional production by The MFA at the Deskbound Complex, London.” The single itself was written two years earlier in a friend’s basement studio beneath a chalet in Les Diablerets, Switzerland, on free software: supporting evidence for clause 1.0. It is not about the kit. It is about the idea.
.0 INCORPORATION. The studio name became a label in 2025, when The MFA’s Alastair Douglas and Rhys Evans opened the complex for business, with Amilcar Torija appointed creative director and James McCaffrey handling PR and communications.
.0 PRIOR FILINGS. ‘The Difference It Makes’ was filed as Border Community 03BC in January 2004, though James Holden had already opened his Balance 005 mix with it months before it was released, and John Digweed was playing early MFA material on Kiss 100 before that. Kompakt then did something the Cologne institution had never done before: licensed a record in, pairing the original with a Superpitcher remix that Pitchfork filed at #43 in its singles of 2005: “not a note could be added or subtracted without making it inferior.” Further MFA filings followed with Bpitch Control, EQ and Precinct, plus remix work for Ellen Allien, Télépopmusik and, on Boxer, Duoteque. In 2009 the lights went off; in 2021 they came back on at Traum Schallplatten, where the 2023 album ‘Lights Out’ was filed. The complex reopened fully in 2025.
.0 PURPOSE. The complex exists to provide a platform for new and established artists to share, collaborate, and release records through: timeless, alternative electronic music that prioritises experience over algorithm. Music has meaning here; vinyl crackles with purpose. Visiting hours are unrestricted. Everyone is welcome in the building.
